At the shores of Tasman Lake, dawn unfolded in a symphony of colour. The dynamic dance of hues and morphing clouds held me spellbound. While Mount Cook National Park and I are old acquaintances, this was my inaugural sunrise at this vantage point. Even on a mere three hours of sleep, following a night immersed in astrophotography, this morning spectacle validated every lost minute of rest. "Warden"

Chasing the Ethereal Glow, December 1st, 2023.
A lone tree standing before the Aurora Australis. Many satellites can also be seen.
Alerted by our aurora app and closely monitoring solar activity, we embarked on a journey with a trove of equipment – three cameras, five lenses, and four tripods – all bound for Banks Peninsula, near Christchurch, New Zealand.

Amidst uncertainty and a last-minute decision, we found ourselves in the perfect spot. As night fell, I set up dual time-lapses and explored pre-selected vantage points, unhurried under the slow dance of the vivid aurora australis. 

Captured through the lenses of a Canon R5, Canon R6ii, and a specially modified Canon R6ii from Spencer's Camera, designed to accentuate the aurora's red hues.

"Starfield"

 

Encapsulating the beauty of night skies from an epic location I've admired over the years.

 

This location in Arthur's Pass, New Zealand, is not just a photography spot for me; it's my escape. Tucked away in nature, it's where I disconnect from everyday life, this peaceful environment always resets me, and I come back feeling refreshed.

 

Having visited countless times, it's one of my favourite locations. Protected from the typical mountain winds by the surrounding native beech forest, it's a perfect spot for astrophotography and setting up camp for the night.

 

In a slight change from my usual methods, I used an 85mm lens, capturing over 60 frames that I stitched together and combined. This approach enhanced the details of the night sky. The time and effort invested in capturing and processing were certainly justified, especially when the Aurora Australis unexpectedly appeared in my panorama. If you zoom in you can spot various satellite trails, highlighting the activity in our night sky.

 

My H.Alpha astro-modified Canon R6ii was important for capturing the vivid colours of nebulae within the Milky Way, enriching the red and magenta hues.

 

The panorama captures different views: the left shows the southern sky, the centre showcases the west, and the right side displays the north. A huge field of view.

I feel I have finally done justice to one of my favourite locations, and I'm very happy to share this with the world.

On an unforgettable weekend, I set out to chase the mesmerizing dance of stars and the Aurora. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we secured our spot, perfectly aligned for views both South and the impending rise of the Milky Way to the East. With the cold setting in, we geared up, surrounded by an array of tripods and six cameras, primed to capture the night's magic. Seeing the Aurora's radiant beams was a long-awaited delight, a testament to the wonders the universe holds.

"Skyswirl"

Introducing "Skyswirl." This image reminds us that the Earth is rotating, and quite rapidly at that. With this photo, I aimed to capture not just a fleeting moment but the passage of time as the stars appear to move around the southern celestial pole.

I stumbled upon this location back in 2016 and was captivated by the scene. I revisited several times, but the constant high waters always hid these delicate sticks from view, making the shot elusive. Their recent emergence from beneath the water, due to the lake's low level, offered a rare opportunity.

Venturing deep into the mud for this shot was not a pleasant experience. After setting up, I tried to move and found myself stuck in the mud. While I laughed it off at the time, cleaning up at my campsite later was quite a task.

Captured over three hours, "Skyswirl" comprises a stack of 340 images, with each frame being a 30-second exposure. The result is this hypnotizing photo showing the Earth's rotation.

To me, this image represents the persistence I've shown in achieving a vision I've held onto for so long.

Nestled at the foot of Aoraki / Mount Cook is the captivating Hooker Lake. I'm often around this region, yet seldom venture in this direction. Venturing here on that brilliantly clear yet frosty day was a choice well made. Aoraki, standing tall and proud, anchors the scene from the center. And in capturing this view? A slight misadventure with the lake ensured wet feet and legs. Yet, it was a small price to pay for such an unparalleled moment.

After wrapping up a time-lapse, something unusual caught my eye in the dark. I hastily reset my camera and snapped a photo, only to be stunned by the result: a fogbow! Illuminated by the moonlight behind me, it was created by light refracting through ice crystals soon to settle as hoar frost. This fleeting phenomenon vanished just after my second shot. I'm truly fortunate to have witnessed and captured such a rarity.

Sun-bleached driftwood has an allure, with its unique tones and colors. On this particular day, I revelled in the beach's ambience - scouting compositions, taking swims, and simply basking in the moment. This image, with its intricate elements harmonizing, stands as a cherished memory of that splendid day.

"Stars of the Sea"

The light was fading, the stars brightening, and a mild breeze was coming off the water carrying the pleasant smell of the ocean, but being on this reef is not peaceful or relaxing, the sea of New Zealand's West Coast is unpredictable and something to pay heed to. I had a job to do, get the shots and get back to shore!

I'm extremely delighted to share my brand new image, an elusive image I have wanted for years.

To achieve this image the conditions had to be perfect, and my timing precise. Moon phase, star alignment, weather and tide were some of the factors to consider.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw unpredicted Aurora Australis beams appear in my image. I was also pleased to see the Zodiacal light under the Milky Way.

I was worried I overstayed my welcome on the reef; stay too long and you won't find your way back through the labyrinth of natural stepping stones, rock elevated from the sea floor that will quickly become submerged under the incoming tide. One wrong step and I'd lose my camera and equipment and be in deep.

I feel I have obtained the unobtainable by capturing this image, especially with Aurora.
There have been many visits to this location, all pleasant and with great friends, but I have never come away with something I'm happy with.

Also, a fun fact, these starfish are carnivores and can regenerate parts of their body.

As dawn's first light brushed the horizon, a unique spectacle emerged over Mount Cook, or as it's reverently known, Aoraki. A solitary lenticular cloud, nature's rare saucer-shaped marvel, perched itself atop the majestic peak. The sun, with its warm hues, painted this cloud, making it appear as a celestial crown for Aoraki. It's moments like these, where the universe aligns in perfect harmony, that I strive to capture. Through my lens, I witnessed and immortalized a dance between earth and sky, where Mount Cook donned a crown only nature could bestow.

"Erceg"

Thrilled to announce that this image won the New Zealand Astrophotography Competition 2023, for the International Dark Sky Reserve award!

In this silent moment, within nature's vastness, I felt truly alive and grateful.

As the moon descended behind the jagged silhouette of a mountain range, I found myself deep within a secluded valley of New Zealand's Southern Alps. Emerging from the hut into the pre-dawn chill, the sight captivated me. I hurriedly reached for my camera, capturing just a fleeting moment before it was gone.

The sharp bite of -8°C still lingered from the night, a testament to the wild and untamed nature of this place. It was a true wilderness experience: 30 kilometres from the nearest cell reception or human presence, forging through rivers and battling consistently soggy feet.

Yet, every challenge only deepened my affection for the adventure. What a moment to cherish!

The journey to capture this image was physically challenging but worth it. Initially, I planned a mountain hike to photograph the Milky Way, but I ended up with an awesome Aurora display.

The hike through Craigieburn Forest, in Canterbury, aiming for a spot at 1,600m altitude as the sun set, was tough. With a 30 kg backpack containing photography gear, a tent, and other essentials, the journey was physically demanding. It was pretty cold, especially as the temperature dropped below freezing, not to mention random gusts of wind. My gear included my tent, three cameras, and four lenses – taken up so I could shoot timelapse video as well.

Pleased to say this was a 2023 Aurora Photographer of the Year image!

"Blue Moon"

I spent a few days meticulously planning this shot of the Blue Super Moon, ensuring every aspect from the moon's path to its luminous glow over Sumner's Shag Rock was perfect. Arriving early, Sumner's tranquillity set the scene, lots of anticipation building.

Did you know? Only 3% of all full moons are blue moons. This Super Moon, larger by 14% and brighter by 30%, made the night even more surreal.
This happens only once every 20 years give or take.

Welcome to the Land of Stone, the harsh desolate landscape is filled with coldness and jagged slate slabs. Nothing lives here, nothing moves.

Perched above a secluded New Zealand mountain, the Large Magellanic Cloud graces the sky. The journey to this breathtaking vantage point was no small feat, but every step of the challenging hike was rewarded by the celestial spectacle that awaited.

Unveiling "Questions," my portrayal of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex set against a secluded mountain range in New Zealand. The title draws inspiration from the image's question mark-like structure, but it also holds a deeper significance to me.

Long nights spent observing the heavens inevitably invoke existential inquiries. What forms of life, if any, exist beyond our planet? How can we fathom the immensity of the universe?

This scene was documented on New Year's Eve 2019, nestled within a remote valley in Canterbury, New Zealand. Despite the rugged landscape and volatile climate that make this valley a challenging destination, I find myself repeatedly drawn to its beauty. The difficulty of the journey, which includes multiple river crossings and extreme weather conditions, only heightens its appeal.

This photograph holds a special place in my heart. It was not only shortlisted for the esteemed Royal Museums Greenwich astrophotography competition but it was also featured in an article I contributed to for BBC Sky at Night magazine.

In that piece, I delved into my experience with LRGB editing—a process that combines luminance, red, green, and blue. This powerful technique uncovers hidden details within raw data, enabling the construction of a vivid and intricate image.

Emphasizing the scene is the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region nestled some 1,500 light years away within the Milky Way. Its distinctive red glow is primarily the result of hydrogen alpha emission. When energy-charged particles collide with the cloud's hydrogen atoms, they excite the electrons. As these electrons revert to their normal state, they release light, largely in the red spectrum—an indicator of the ongoing stellar birth within the complex.

Snow-kissed banks of Lake Lyndon presented a rare and mesmerising sight. Such scenes are few and far between, compelling me to launch my drone and seize this spellbinding beauty from above.

"The Peak"

Silver winner in the Epson International Panorama Awards 2021.

This photo "The Peak," holds a unique spot in my portfolio and is what I believe to be the first astro image taken from the top of Peak Hill, New Zealand. This is more than just a photograph to me, it's the image that gave me the confidence to tackle intense hikes like this.

Within this panorama, not only can we see the Milky Way rising, but we can see two objects which can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere - the Eta Carina Nebula makes its appearance at the top center, with the Large Magellanic Cloud to the right and waves of airglow gracing the horizon. Airglow occurs when atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, excited by sunlight, emit light to shed their excess energy.

Getting this image wasn't straightforward. The aim was to scale Peak Hill with all my heavy astrophotography equipment and then capture panoramic night views. Shortly into the hike, the burden of the 27kg bag hit me. The trail was steep and demanding, but the excitement and vision of the shot kept me going.

On arrival at the top, the wind started blasting me. For precise long exposure shots, a calm environment is crucial. On my third try at this multi-row panorama, the wind dropped off and I had a 40-minute window of stillness.

The creation of this photo spanned 4 hours of driving, 5 hours of hiking, 7 hours on the hill, and another 8 meticulously editing and piecing everything together.

"The Peak" isn’t just about the epic visual appeal; it captures passion, accuracy, and a bit of self-created luck. It's a reflection of my journey. This is a standout piece of mine, now available as a print for those who resonate with its essence. I hope you can experience a sense of connection to it, similar to what I feel.

Hovering my drone above the Clay Cliffs at Ōmarama during sunrise, I felt as though I'd been transported to Mars. From my aerial perspective, the familiar terrain took on an ethereal quality.
